Abstract :
Pollinator insects are essential for maintenance of genetic diversity of plants. Here, we studied the diversity of pollinator insects and its effect to seed set of Jatropha curcas (Euphorbiaceae). Observation of pollinator insects by scan method was conducted in Jatropha plantation to assess species composition of floral visitors. Effectiveness of two pollinator bees species i.e. Apis cerana and A. mellifera were measured by the number of seeds set and seeds weight. The flower-visitors of J. curcas consists of bees and ants (Hymenoptera), butterfly and moth (Lepidoptera), beetles (Coleoptera), thrips (Thysanoptera), and flies (Diptera). At least, four species of bees, i.e. A. cerana, Trigona sp. Ceratina sp, and Hylaeus sp. visited the flowers. Diversity of pollinator insects and honeybees (A. cerana and A. mellifera) pollination increased the seed set and seed weight of J. curcas. Most probably, pollination effectiveness of A. cerana on J. curcas was higher than that of A. mellifera.
